2008 Mysterium

The Wine
Each year our winemaker blends our favorite old vine varietals together to create our Mysterium. Every vintage proves to be different so the Mysterium Blend is truly a “Mystery” until we bottle. This vintage is a blend of 39% Carignane, 27% Zinfandel, 21% Old Vine Mourvedre, 7% Alicante Bouschet, 5% Old Vine Petite Sirah, and 1% Black Malvoise.

The Winemaking
Fermented separately and blended after partial barrel aging, this wine was carefully constructed to match the individual strengths of each varietal. The modern techniques of cold soaking the grapes prior to fermentation and a slow cool fermentation rate, insured the maximum extractions of color and the preservation of fruit flavors without the over extraction of bitter tannins from the skins and seeds.

The Vineyard
Our winemaker has chosen the best and oldest vineyards from Mendocino and Contra Costa County to make our Mysterium blend. The roots of our vines extend deep into the earth, creating deep, rich flavors and colors in our wine.

The Vinetage
Napa Valley’s vintners will remember 2008 as a year that offered winemakers a little bit of everything. It may end up being a year known for exceptional quality but not abundance. Drought preceded a hard frost, which led to an uneven set and a small crop. The heat spikes started just as the harvest began but after that it was all smooth sailing.
